STATESBORO, Ga. (WTOC) - Hundreds of residents at The Vault apartments in Statesboro received a notice in the form of a letter on their doors on Monday saying that they had to vacate their homes by Friday.

Families and students have been moving out of their apartments since a letter was delivered to their doorsteps saying they had to vacate their homes due to the city deeming the apartments on the property to be structurally unsafe.

A few residents told WTOC they don’t have anywhere to go and that they can’t afford to stay in a hotel this short notice.

“So, where does that leave everybody else? Homeless.”

Others say they didn’t learn that they had to move out until today.

“She texted me and she said what are you going to do for housing? I said what are you talking about and she said The Vault is closing.”

Georgia Southern student Christina Colley says she’s lucky because she is a senior at Georgia Southern and was moving out soon anyway.

However, she says she has made several complaints to management in the past about her apartment.

“The second year my lease started, it just went so downhill and even if you ask management to come fix something, they didn’t. They would be like we don’t have management right now, so it’s been going downhill ever since the second year I started my lease.”

In the letter The Vault management gave residents, it says the city of Statesboro asked them to vacate every resident.

However, in the letter issued by the city to The Vault, it states that the apartment complex has ten days to come up with a plan or actions to fix the apartment buildings.

The city of Statesboro was prompted to send this letter after inspections were done by engineering consultants deemed the buildings to be unsafe and too deteriorated for healthy living.

Different resources in the Statesboro community have reached out to aid the residents with different open housing options, temporary free healthcare, and different options for free meals.

WTOC reached out to the Vault management who declined to comment.

STATESBORO, Ga. —

Panic and outrage are sweeping through a Statesboro community after hundreds of residents, including families, students, and veterans, were told they must vacate their apartments within five days. The news broke Monday when tenants at The Vault Apartments, located not far from Georgia Southern University, discovered shocking eviction notices taped to their doors.

The abrupt eviction came after city inspectors deemed the complex "dangerous to the life, health, property, and safety of the occupants," citing severe safety and maintenance issues. Residents had already paid rent for April when the notices appeared.

"This right here. You can just squeeze and just peel it off. It's just it's not even on. There's a hole that goes up underneath it right now that's just rotted out," said Duston Bowen, a long-time resident of The Vault. Bowen has lived in the complex for nearly a decade and says he’s spent the last four years begging management to make repairs — calls he says were ignored.

City officials had given the property ten days to submit a repair plan. Instead, residents were met with the startling order to vacate the premises by Friday, leaving them with little time and even fewer options.

"Basically, saying that we need to move out by Friday. By the end of the business day," Bowen explained.

Now, hundreds are scrambling to find housing, unsure where they’ll go next. Some, like Georgia Southern student Walter Robinson, say the dangers aren’t new.

"When I opened the closet, an army of roaches crawled out of the closet," Robinson said.

For students like him, the situation goes beyond health hazards. It’s now threatening their future. One tenant shared her fear that she may miss graduation because her cap and gown are already enroute to the apartment.

“My cap and gown are literally on the way here to be shipped, and it's too late to change the shipment address, so I'm trying to get in contact with the people to see if I can be able to get a cabbie out. If not, I won't be able to walk," said resident and GSU student Tamia Allen.

Local nonprofits are now stepping in to fill the void. Christian Southern Ministries is among those offering immediate relief, providing food and support to affected residents.

"One of the biggest crisis that we have in Butler County and state for our area is housing, affordable housing," said the ministry’s executive director, John Long.

Legal action may soon follow. Bowen says he’s seriously considering suing the apartment complex: "I'm gonna tell ya. Yeah, I'm probably gonna do it. There ain't no question about it."

As of now, residents have until the end Friday night to move out.

HISTORY: Now in its 45th year, the Schenkel Invitational is one of the most prestigious tournaments in collegiate golf. Though the official tournament began in 1971, the story begins much earlier than that.

During World War II, the U.S. Army sent a young Chris Schenkel to a language institute at then called Georgia Teachers College in Statesboro, Georgia. Schenkel lived in Sanford Hall overlooking Sweetheart Circle during his nine-month stay, and the Indiana native built a bond with Statesboro that would last a lifetime and serve as the beginning of what would become an annual event in the town.

After the war, Schenkel embarked on a Hall of Fame broadcasting career, one of the most distinguished in the history of the industry. He was the first to cover The Masters on television, the first to anchor a live telecast of the Olympics and the first to call a nationally broadcast college football game. He was inducted into 16 halls of fame and received an Emmy for Lifetime Achievement.

COURSE INFORMATION: Playing at a par-72, 7,123-yard layout, Forest Heights Country Club was originally a 9-hole golf facility opened in 1947. In the early 1960s, the club membership acquired adjoining land and added a second nine. The original course designer was George Cobb. In 1990, Bob Cupp redesigned several holes and made changes to all green complexes. The course has mini Verde Bermuda grass on greens which are in immaculate condition most of the year thanks to our course superintendent, Steve Collins, and his crew.
